Onicah Kgoale’s Journey of Leadership and Creativity.

Posted / 23 July 2025

Onicah Kgoale is currently pursuing a BA in Performing Arts at the University of Limpopo. Her passion for acting, writing and teaching drama is driven by a strong belief that art can be a powerful way to address some of the most pressing challenges in South Africa, such as gender based violence.

Her leadership journey began in high school when she joined the Columba Leadership Programme. Onicah was motivated by a desire to develop her leadership skills and make a positive difference in her school community. She fondly recalls the excitement of being selected for the leadership camp and how it boosted her confidence. Becoming a leader during her school days inspired her to work hard academically so she could lead by example. Through the programme, she learned the importance of listening, following and working well with others, lessons that helped her grow into a more effective leader.

One of the most valuable lessons Onicah took from Columba was the importance of creativity. It helped her realise that her artistic talents could be used to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. She also learned to overcome difficulties with teamwork and became more comfortable collaborating and sharing ideas. The support and encouragement she received during challenging times taught her perseverance and resilience.

Today, Onicah applies the values she learned through Columba in her roles as a tutor and peer counsellor at university. She helps fellow students by simplifying difficult concepts and providing motivational support, especially during exam periods. Her creativity inspires new ideas for practical sessions and performances, while her focus and awareness enable her to respond to the individual needs of her students. Beyond her academic work, she has also served as a radio presenter and programme director, always guided by the values of service and leadership.

Onicah credits the Columba Leadership Programme with giving her important skills such as mentorship and confidence to stand before others and teach. She encourages current learners to fully engage with the programme and take every opportunity to grow. She believes youth leadership is vital in South Africa today and that young people have the power to bring fresh perspectives and positive change.

As an active member of the Columba alumni network, Onicah continues to develop both professionally and personally. She values the support and resources it offers, including help with preparing for the world of work. Passionate about giving back, she looks forward to mentoring current learners and passing on the spirit of service she gained through Columba.

Onicah’s story is a clear example of how the Columba Leadership Programme nurtures confident, creative and compassionate young leaders who are ready to make a lasting difference.
